ActiveScore: making cycle facilities useful every day

Cycle facilities prove their usefulness through the experience of the people using them. For owners and facility managers, the ActiveScore approach offers a starting point for connecting physical provision with services, communication and continuing improvement.

1. Understand what ActiveScore assesses

The official ActiveScore page describes three areas: infrastructure, occupier engagement services and future-proofing. The assessment concerns a property’s active travel facilities and services. Criteria and evidence must be confirmed for the specific assessment; the recommendations below are implementation advice, not an official scoring checklist.

Start with a named coordinator and a discussion involving the manager, tenants and users. Gather concrete issues: unclear access, lockers permanently occupied, no repair service or uncertainty among people who have not cycled for some time.

2. Check the experience from entrance to desk

A walkthrough with a new user can reveal difficulties missing from drawings. Can the door be opened while holding a bicycle? Is the parking location obvious? Is there room for luggage? Signs, lighting and reception information should create a coherent route.

Test equipment with the expected bicycles and people of different heights. Provide suitable options for heavier bicycles and users who cannot lift a bike. Access adaptations should be discussed with competent designers and checked against the site constraints.

3. Build a service people understand

Publish simple rules covering access, lockers, fault reporting and repairs. Provide an identifiable contact and response hours. In international buildings in Bucharest or Cluj, Romanian and English information reduces reliance on improvised explanations at reception.

Offer periodic maintenance, adjustment sessions and practical training. A workshop covering brakes, tyre pressure and lights addresses different needs from a group ride. Voluntary participation and beginner-friendly formats help involve a broader range of people.

In one possible arrangement, the manager communicates the workshop schedule monthly and employers include it in team updates. On registration, participants receive the duration, required skill level and equipment to bring. After the activity they receive a contact for questions. This simple journey makes the service easy to understand and repeat.

4. Schedule activities and track resolved problems

Prepare a quarterly calendar alongside the launch day. Alternate bicycle trials, workshops and accompanied rides. Local associations and NGOs can contribute experience and community knowledge through an agreed programme with clear responsibilities.

Track active users in aggregate, participation, equipment downtime and issue resolution times. Ask for feedback on remaining barriers. Data should support service management; individual journey tracking is not necessary for every indicator.

Compare periods with reasonably similar conditions and record changes in building occupancy. Lower holiday participation does not mean the same thing as a prolonged access outage. Use observations for concrete decisions, not general conclusions about employee motivation.

5. Plan the next stage with BICILUM

Allow for expansion and review the offer periodically with tenants. BICILUM can coordinate equipment, shared fleets, maintenance and user support, including activities with local partners. Request a review of existing facilities and a technical and financial proposal for your building in Romania. Assessment and certification are provided by ActiveScore; our offer concerns solutions and their ongoing operation.
